Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
